Coach Mario Washington

History with Western Albemarle

Coach Washington is familiar with Western Albemarle, Crozet, and the lacrosse community, entering his 13th season with his alma mater and 4th year as the Varsity Head Coach. While attending Western, Coach Washington was a standout three-sport athlete and was honored as Male Athlete of the Year in 2006.

Collegiate Experience

After graduating, he continued his playing career at Hampden-Sydney College, where he played for four years and earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and finance.

Coaching Career

Mario Washington returned to Western Albemarle as a coach in 2011, working with the football, wrestling, and lacrosse teams. He has coached numerous All-American athletes and over 50 All-State players during his tenure at WAHS. The Daily Progress named Mario Washington the 2021 Central Virginia Coach of the Year and guided the Warriors to Jefferson District and Region 4A Championships.

Coach Washington helped coach the Western Albemarle Boy’s Lacrosse team to back-to-back state championship appearances in 2015 and 2016.

Coach Washington has carried a variety of titles, including, 7th and 8th grade Western Albemarle Lacrosse Club (WALC) Head Coach. Coach Washington has since transitioned into the role of Program Director for the Western Albemarle Lacrosse Club, serving the lacrosse needs of youth in the Western District of Albemarle County.  

Coach Washington lives in Albemarle County with his wife, Lauren, and their two daughters, Quinn and Harper.
